a river of light

Fifteen days after Diwali, Varanasi celebrates Dev Deepawali on the full-moon night of Kartik Purnima.

Tradition holds that the gods descend to Earth to bathe in the sacred Ganga. As dusk falls, millions of earthen lamps illuminate the riverfront. Temple bells, devotional music, rangoli, Ganga Aarti and the reflection of countless flames create a night that feels both intimate and immense.
